Creative programs in PRISON reduce disciplinary incidents by up to 75%.

WHAT:

Much like Shakespeare Behind Bars (as seen in the Golden Globe–nominated film Sing Sing), Comedy Unlocked explores the restorative power of creative expression—this time through stand up comedy. The documentary follows Susanna and a group of five justice-involved youth, as they embark on a six week journey learning how to find their voice, and build confidence, by reframing their own experiences into empowerment, healing, and transformation.

WHY:

Research shows that creative expression—particularly comedy—can be a powerful tool for emotional processing, resilience-building, and behavior change. Humor allows people to safely confront trauma, reframe personal narratives, and build confidence through shared connection. In institutional settings, programs that foster self-expression, empathy, and personal accountability have been shown to support reduced recidivism and stronger reentry outcomes.

WHO:

Featured in Variety as one of the nation’s top ten in the Educational Impact Report for Innovative Approaches to Learning, Susanna Spies is a veteran comedian and educator. She has spent more than two decades developing and leading her program Comedy Playground for kids and teens focused on emotional growth, self-expression, and resilience. Since 2003, her original curriculum has been implemented with diverse populations across the world, including at-risk youth impacted by drugs, and gang violence.

US/Canadian award-winning writer/producer, Bobby Salomon has worked on hundreds of hours of content for HBO, Netflix, Amazon, CBS, A&E, TLC, History, and more, including Emmy-winning Love on the Spectrum US and Critics’ Choice Award-nominatedLike a Girl.

Los Angeles-based producer, writer, director, and actor, Tommy Soward's documentary Slippin’: Ten Years with the Bloods, premiered at Tribeca, won Best Picture at the Montenegro Film Festival, and ranked #2 on Showtime Networks.

HOW:

We are partnering with The Opportunity Center in Houston to provide a six week comedy workshop led by Susanna. Through her original curriculum of structured, interactive exercises, they will build trust, confidence, and comedic voice as they develop a personal five-minute stand-up routine culminating in a celebratory live performance and filmed within a documentary feature film.

WHEN:

Principal photography is planned for July 2026. The project is also being developed with potential for expansion into a docu-series format.
